Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and how essential oils can help
SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a type of depression that gets its name from the pattern it presents around the seasons. It is also known as Winter Depression because the symptoms are usually more apparent and more severe during the winter months, although some people have symptoms in the summer and feel better during the winter.
The exact cause of SAD is not fully understood, but it's often linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the shorter autumn and winter days. The main theory is that a lack of sunlight might stop a part of the brain called the hypothalamus from working properly, which may affect the:
* production of melatonin
* production of serotonin
* body's internal clock (circadian rhythm)
There are many treatments for SAD which can include, but are not limited to; lifestyle changes, light therapy, talking therapies and antidepressants.
But did you also know there are several Essential Oils which have been shown to be beneficial in helping Depression/low mood? These include Bergamot, Geranium, Ylang Ylang and trusty Lavender which is a brilliant all-rounder.
