A Holistic Perspective on the Blood Moon Eclipse Lunar Cycles and Mindset

On March 14, 2025, the night sky will be illuminated by a spectacular total lunar eclipse, commonly known as a Blood Moon. Also known as the Worm Moon, a traditional full moon that marks the transition from winter to spring.

A Blood Moon occurs when the Earth positions itself between the Sun and the Moon, casting a reddish hue on the lunar surface due to the scattering of sunlight through Earth's atmosphere. The term Worm Moon originates from indigenous and early settler traditions, symbolising the thawing earth and the re-emergence of earthworms, a sign of fertility and renewal.

The 2025 eclipse will be visible across the Americas, Europe, and Africa, with totality lasting approximately 66 minutes. For sky watchers, this will be a powerful time to reflect on both personal and ecological cycles of change. I know that both Laura and I will be reflecting during this time with an early morning walk to embrace the power and energy of this event.

The Moon’s cycles have long been associated with nature’s rhythms—guiding foraging practices, agricultural cycles, and even emotional and spiritual well-being. By understanding the interplay of lunar phases, we can align our physical and mental activities with the natural flow of energy that the Moon offers.

Lunar Cycles and Their Influence on Planting and Mindset

Just as the Moon’s gravitational pull influences ocean tides, it is believed to affect moisture levels in soil and plant sap, guiding traditional farming methods. These principles extend beyond agriculture, influencing foraging, composting, and even emotional well-being.

Foraging in Alignment with the Moon

Full Moon & Waning Phase

A time for harvesting and foraging. Sap and moisture are drawn downward, making this an optimal time to gather mushrooms, root vegetables, and wild herbs like dandelion and burdock, known for their cleansing properties.

New Moon & Waxing Phase

The earth is more active with upward-moving energy. This is a great time to forage for leafy greens, early spring shoots, and nutrient-dense wild edibles.

Lunar Planting Cycles

First Quarter (Waxing Crescent to First Quarter)

This is the best time for planting leafy greens, such as lettuce, kale, and herbs. Their growth is stimulated by increasing moonlight and rising water levels in the soil.

Full Moon to Last Quarter

A favourable time for root vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and beets. The downward pull of lunar gravity supports strong root development.

Last Quarter to New Moon

A time of rest, composting, and renewal. Focus on soil enrichment, letting go of old habits, and preparing for the next cycle of growth.

Emotional & Spiritual Alignment

Waxing Moon (New to Full)

A time for setting intentions, manifestation, and creative endeavours. This is when energy builds, making it ideal for starting new projects.

Waning Moon (Full to New)

A period of release, reflection, and simplification. Use this time for decluttering—both physically and emotionally.

The Blood Moon’s Call to Action

Lunar eclipses symbolise transformation, revealing what has been hidden and urging us to realign with our true path. The 2025 eclipse in Virgo calls for an evaluation of habits, organisation, and well-being. Whether through gardening, foraging, or personal introspection, this is a time to honour cycles of renewal and consciously align with the energies of the Earth and Moon.

By embracing the wisdom of the lunar cycle, we can cultivate a deeper connection with nature, enhance our personal growth, and engage in mindful practices that sustain both body and spirit. The Blood/Worm Moon of 2025 invites us to plant, harvest, release, and renew—just as nature does with each passing season.
